Maintenance works on engineering structures
From mid‑summer until the end of last year, minor structural maintenance works (KBU) were carried out on five bridges along the N21. The structures extend over the entire route, from the N09/N21 interchange in Martigny (km 0) to the entrance of the Great St Bernard Tunnel (km 39).
The works included the replacement of expansion joints and the rehabilitation of the abutments of bridges A21 over the SBB railway and over road T9; the renewal of kerbs, waterproofing and pavement layers, as well as bridge equipment on the Trappistes Bridge; the rehabilitation of masonry work and the compliance upgrading of the restraint system on the Aron Bridge; and the strengthening of the Perche Bridge.
Given the numerous works on the N21, one lane per direction was maintained on each structure in order to limit disruption to road users. Due to the proximity of bridges A21 over the SBB railway and road T9 to the N09/N21 interchange, the Sion – Great St Bernard slip road had to be closed during the works.
