The Cantonal Office for Buildings (OCBA) of Geneva is planning the construction of a new educational facility to house the Noëlla Rouget Upper Secondary School in Meyrin, on the former gravel pit site at the intersection of Avenue Sainte-Cécile and Avenue Auguste-François-Dubois. The new building will comprise more than 100 classrooms, science laboratories, music and visual arts rooms, creative activity spaces, offices and meeting rooms, a library, a refectory and kitchen, an assembly hall (aula), a gymnasium, a triple sports hall, and four courtyards. The project extends over four levels — one basement and three above-ground floors.
The structural concept aims to create a rational and sustainable system, built primarily with locally sourced timber. Columns and girders are made of wood. The timber–concrete composite slabs consist of rectangular timber beams combined with reinforced concrete topping. The timber–concrete connection is achieved using metal connectors. The cantilevered walkways, which also serve as escape routes, are fully integrated into the floor structures at each level. For large-span areas such as the aula, sports halls, and refectory, composite steel girders and steel–concrete composite slabs are used.
The building is partly founded on a raft foundation with deepened zones in areas of good bearing capacity, and on a combination of raft, ground beams, and piles in zones with weak and highly variable soil conditions, in order to limit differential settlements. Horizontal stability is ensured by continuous reinforced concrete cores forming the stair and elevator shafts, together with the diaphragm action of the timber–concrete and steel–concrete composite slabs. The construction requires significant earthworks. Excavations are supported by soil-nailed walls and soldier pile walls (Berliner walls) in confined areas, while slopes are provided in the remaining zones.
