The St-Jacques Foundation is planning the extension of the EMS Foyer St-Jacques, located at Avenue du Midi 2 in St-Maurice, through the enlargement of the existing building. The project includes three advanced geriatric care units, a day-care facility, sheltered apartments, as well as offices and shared spaces for the entire establishment.

The extension consists of the construction of a new building, the EMS Extension, providing a capacity of 39 beds for permanent residents, as well as a second building, the AEMS, dedicated to senior housing. The existing EMS remains operational, and minor alteration works are planned throughout.

The EMS Extension is adjacent to the existing EMS, and connections are created at each level to ensure circulation between the different parts of the facility.

The EMS extension and the AEMS comprise 5 and 4 storeys respectively and do not include basements. The buildings are founded on 15 m long displacement piles, combined with a raft foundation and ground beams. The load-bearing structure, monolithic, is made of reinforced concrete, using type 4 concrete for exposed surfaces. The lift and stair cores ensure the seismic stability of the buildings and transfer loads down to the foundation piles.

The façades consist of prefabricated concrete sandwich panels, including an inner reinforced concrete structural layer ensuring load transfer as well as resistance to seismic forces.

From a seismic design perspective, the different structures are separated to behave independently. A seismic joint is provided at the interfaces to prevent any risk of structural pounding in the event of an earthquake.
